We are pleased to announce that, to coincide with the popular return of the AAAs Championships and Olympic Trials to the Alexander Stadium in Birmingham, the 2008 BASC Members Dinner will take place nearby on Saturday July 12th after the conclusion of the day's track and field programme.
We are delighted to confirm that Ian Stewart MBE, one of Britain's greatest-ever athletes, is to be our main guest for the 2008 dinner.
Due to the timetable of the day's events in the Alexander Stadium we are planning for the meal to be served at around 9pm to allow those attending more time to arrive at the hotel.
Ian Stewart MBE
Ian is best remembered for his 5000m victory in the 1970 Commonwealth Games in Edinburgh, when he defeated world distance legends Kenya's Kip Keino and Australia's Ron Clarke amongst others in a European record time of 13:22:8.
Bronze medallist at the 1972 Munich Olympics and outpaced only on the last lap in Montreal four years later, both times beaten by legendary Finnish Olympian Lasse Viren, he also remains Britain's last male winner of the World Cross Country title to date.
Since retiring from competition, Ian has become Meeting Director for Fast Track and is responsible for putting together the top-quality line-ups seen at British televised meetings.
In keeping with the format set at previous dinners, Ian has kindly agreed to say a few words to us after the meal and to then take questions from the floor, either about his career as an athlete or in his commercial capacity at Fast Track.
The dinner
The venue for this year's dinner will be The Great Barr Hotel and Conference Centre (see www.thegreatbarrhotel.com), situated some 5 minutes by car from the Alexander Stadium.
We would emphasise that attendance at this event is strictly limited to club members and their guests only, so any non-members wishing to attend should download and complete the application form for club membership as soon as possible and return it to our Membership Secretary with their subscription payment.
We have now mailed booking forms for the dinner to all our members and would ask those members who wish to attend to please book early to avoid disappointment. Last year's dinner was a sell-out and was much enjoyed by all who attended.
We hope to see you there for what should be a great evening.
