Awards 2009

Young Male Athlete for 2008 BASC chairman Philip Andrew presents the award to Jack Meredith of Liverpool Harriers during BIG 2009. Jack had an outstanding season in 2008, winning the inter-boys 100m hurdles title at the English Schools in Gateshead in 12.70s, beating the championship record held by Jon Ridgeon. He was unbeaten throughout the 2008 season at 100m hurdles.

Shaunna Thompson of Sale Harriers receives the Young Female Athlete award for 2008 from Philip Andrew at BIG 2009. Shaunna enjoyed an outstanding 2008 season and was the star of the Commonweath Youth Games in Pune, winning the 100m in a record time of 11.46s and the 200m in 23.42s (both PBs). She is also an English Schools and U17 title winner.

This year's Susanna Ingram Award to a young disability athlete was presented at Bedford to T54 wheelchair racer Daniel Lucker. 16-year old Daniel, from Abergavenny, was junior world champion in 2008 at 1500m and 5000m and has twice won the Adidas Mini London Marathon. He was the winner of the "Rising Star" award at last year's National Disability Events Sports Award. Dan is coached by two-times London marathon winner Chris Hallam.  Daniel becomes the fifth winner of this BASC award.

We were delighted that Jean Pickering herself was able to present Simon Duberley with his Ron Pickering Coaching Award on behalf of the BASC. This club has a proud tradition going back almost 20 years now in supporting the development of quality coaching of British athletes in the name of the great Ron Pickering. Simon has been involved in athletics first as an athlete and then as a coach for over 15 years. Now based at the West London Performance Centre at Brunel University, he is working with a squad of sprinters including  European Indoor 4x400m relay silver medallist Nigel Levine and has been developing a hi-tech approach to sprint training. We send our congratulations and best wishes for the future to all four award winners. Thank you! Once again we are in debt to the members of our club for their magnificent support of our awards. It is through the voluntary donations of BASC members that these awards are possible. We would also like to thank Carol Jackson and her hard-working team at the Bedford International Stadium for their assistance and co-operation in allowing us to present these awards during BIG 2009.
